Bonny Doon Fused Glass Art is located at the home of Laurie and Joel Spray in the mountains north of Santa Cruz in the community known as Bonny Doon. At this studio Laurie shows her finished glass art by appointment and also produces special tools for other glass artists around the country. After being a potter for 35+ years Laurie has studied glass fusing and has created this studio exclusively for glass. Her pottery throwing abilities allow her to make clay molds for herself and other glass artist friends. Below is a list of other tools available and special fused glass classes that are offered.

Pattern Bar Formers

Pattern Bar Formers!!!!

Brand new are my Pattern Bar Formers that come in 4 lengths. They are great to use as a fill in on that little edge of kiln space that can get wasted. Many times I will have a narrow spot and there is not enough room to make a pattern bar with kiln shelfs for dams. This eliminates the lost heat and space of the dams! They come in 18", 14", 10", and 8" lengths! They are also great for lining up in a row to make production pattern bars. Try combing a pattern bar like the one above!!!

Now I will be making the 8" and 10" ones 2" deep because so many people are excited about making them with the pot melt method! All you do is line them with your 1/8" fiber and position your pot or 2 over the form and fire to 1650 with a hold of 30 min.
Be sure the holes in your pot are inside the center of the stainless steel form and do not overlap the fiber. When you slice these up they can have fabulous patterns that you cannot achieve in a regular pattern bar set up!!

These are just like the other stainless steel forms that I make in that you line the walls with 1/8" fiber and put directly on a prepared kiln shelf. Slice up the fused glass from a pattern bar former with a wet saw a viola!!!!! You can see one use of pattern bars down the center of this cobalt tray above. In the one to the left I have laid up the slices and surrounded them with 3/8 slices on their sides, put into another form with fiber and stainless and full fused.

Below is a picture of pot melts into pattern bar formers. These are very exciting and simple to do. Slice them up to see the surprises inside! Here are a couple of shots of ones I have made........

Very exciting possibilities!!!!!

Sizes are exterior of stainless.

Stainless Steel Rings

Stainless steel rings are great for Pot Melts!!!!! The picture above was a pot melt fired in a 14" round then refused on an double 18" round. No need to dam on second firing!

These are very round and square.....the photo throws it off a little!

More sizes available on list below!

These rings are perfect for deep glass, combing, pot melt forms (see picture above), and for using up scrap glass. They are used by putting a lining of 1/8” fiber around the interior of the circle and sitting it right on a kiln washed shelf.

The top little picture is of an extra trick I have been using.....I cut a very thin strip of 1/8 fiber scrap and put it under the stainless in 3 places then as it is up a little I push the fiber ring to the floor of the kiln. This is great if you ever happen to go to the extreme temp....if your glass ever wants to go under the wall it will only touch fiber. It works great. I fire in these rings every day and have not had them touch glass once since I have been adding this touch!!

Here is a great site to help calculate amounts of glass to use!!

On day 2 you will be slicing up your pattern bar pieces on a wet saw and learning about the many techniques for using them. You will be able to take home all of your pieces to use in your own studio after preparing them.
There will be a demo of combing a pattern bar and also how to make pot melt pattern bars.

You will also finish the edges on you deep glass piece to prepare it for slumping while learning how to use cold working equipment. You will learn the use of a large lap grinder in this cold working process.
This class will go over firing schedules, annealing, and other problems associated with thick class firing. It is information filled and is for experienced fusers only.

Othe second day cold work it and learn different processes to finish it off. You will take home your own pot for future use and your finished piece will be ready a few days after class and can be shipped to you. On the afternoon of the first day we will also explore combing with a demonstration.
